Powering digital innovation & connecting the sustainable future
Under the theme “Connecting the Sustainable Future”, and with a focus on the circular economy, German materials manufacturer Covestro is presenting at ChinaCoat, one of the industry’s leading trade fairs, now with a digital showroom for the first time. ChinaCoat 2020, to be held in Guangzhou from December 8 to 10, 2020, is combining both virtual and physical exhibition halls for the first time in response to Covid-19, providing new experiences to exhibitors and visitors. Covestro will showcase its latest innovations and collaborations in various fields and explore new trends in the coatings industry with diverse partners in an effort to accelerate the circular economy and sustainable development in China.

With China’s “New Infrastructure” initiative and the advent of the 5G era, the digital economy has developed rapidly in recent years, with new markets and business forms emerging one after another, bringing revitalized momentum to China’s economic growth. Meanwhile, the demand for sustainable development in various fields is also on the rise. In line with these trends, Covestro has launched a range of innovative waterborne polyurethane coatings solutions for industries such as construction, automotive, consumer electronics and textiles, which will be displayed in the Covestro digital showroom.

Digital innovation enables sustainable development

“In order to seize new opportunities, Covestro has applied digitalization across its business, including R&D, production, and logistics. We also want to drive the digitalization of China’s chemical industry and help accelerate the transformation to a circular economy,” said Zhong Xiaobin, Senior Vice President of Business Unit Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties (CAS), Covestro Asia Pacific. “With the digital showroom, we hope to invite more people to understand how Covestro's products, technologies and solutions are used in our daily lives, and more intuitively experience our close connection with a sustainable future.”

In the construction segment, Covestro developed a series of waterborne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) products to meet the urgent market needs for high-performance waterborne waterproofing coatings. The latest product Bayhydrol® UH 2895 shows the excellent balance of environmental friendliness and high performance. The coating formulation based on this raw material offers ultra-low water absorption rate at less than 5% to effectively resist leakage. It has excellent crack bridging to defend concrete microcracks in terms of superior resilience higher than 80%. The coating film can keep high mechanical strength retention when being soaked in water. In addition, the new solution has outstanding low temperature flexibility, and the coating film does not crack even when bent at -35 °C, protecting buildings in cold winters.

In the automotive segment, Covestro’s waterborne polyurethane auto refinish base coat can effectively reduce 80% of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) per spray area than traditional solventborne solution. The one-component waterborne polyurethane dispersion (PUD) - Bayhydrol® UH 2110 for refinishing solution, which Covestro developed and produced locally, further improves wet color matching and pigment wetting, and fully demonstrates pigment color. The solution dramatically improves the hardness and early sanding-ability of coating film, and further increases the productivity of using waterborne auto refinish coating. This outer color is stable and durable, and the coating film shows a better metallic feel.

In the consumer electronics segment, Covestro introduced a new polyurethane waterborne dispersion Bayhydrol® UH 2898 coating solution to meet coating companies’ demands for environmental protection and sustainability, and drive the development of waterborne plastic coating for consumer electronics application. It provides excellent film appearance, high hardness and excellent water resistance for base coat, and is particularly suitable for metallic base coating. Meanwhile, the base coat, formulated with Bayhydrol® UH 2898, can be coated with various top coat systems, for example, polyurethane and UV top coat.

In the textile segment, Covestro is committed to providing innovative alternative raw materials to drive the development of the circular economy. As an example, Covestro’s partially bio-based polyurethane dispersion (PUD) technologies are now being used by some manufacturers to help produce coated fabrics in a more sustainable way and reduce their carbon footprint, while yielding excellent performance. Recently, one of the products with approximately 50% renewable carbon content from this portfolio has been used in production of some notebook cover coating made by Moleskine. While providing the surface coating with great hand-feel and superior performance, that also contribute to sustainability. This product is under the umbrella brand of Covestro’s INSQIN® water-based textile coating technology and suitable to be used for a variety of textile coating applications.

Serving the China market with product upgrades and localization

As part of Covestro’s coating and adhesive solutions, the new ultra series high-performance cross linkers set a new standard in industrial hygiene, protecting production and construction sites. The residual monomer content of the ultra cross linkers is reduced to less than 0.1 percent by weight, matching the performance level of conventional products. They can be widely used in many fields without compromising the product quality, making direct replacement easy in most applications.

Since the beginning of this year, the Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties (CAS) Business Unit has substantially localized production of a variety of imported products, including waterborne and solventborne special hardeners. Going forward, Covestro plans to further improve its R&D and innovation capabilities and its localization process, to meet the changing needs of the China market and explore more possibilities for sustainable development in the future.
