Chemistry Lights Up Diversity – Science Education for Children

With Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the heart of Covestro’s working culture, Covestro Taiwan has developed two CSR initiatives from these concepts. The first series is the MagicMaterial School, which is designed for students with hearing impairments. It aims to ignite children’s curiosity in science, whilst encouraging mutual respect and an awareness for each others unlimited potential.
The second inititative is the Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp. This project’s primary aim is to shorten the distance between grandparents and grandchildren, as well encouraging opportunities for lifelong learning. Both the initiatives were winners of the 2022 PR News Global Social Impact Award, in different categories – The MagicMaterial school won the “Diversity and Inclusion Series” and the“In-House Diversity and Inclusion Campaign”, whilst the Covestro Grandparent-Grandchild Science Camp was the winner of the “Campaign by a Non-US Based Company” category.

DEI Concept in National Enviromental Storytelling Competition

This year, together with 10 more partners, Covestro Taiwan hosted a national enviromental storytelling competition, with the rules designed with the DEI concept in mind. The competition attracted 658 entries from 107 schools across Taiwan, with 24 categories’ award winners being from 15 out of the 22 different counties in Taiwan. Winners included children with hearing and visual impairments.“Resources children have in different locations are also different,” said Renee Chen, Head of Communications of the company. “Our purpose is to let children from every corner of Taiwan, with or without disabilities, all have an equal chance to win and speak up for the oceans.”

“Chemical reactions do not only happen in science, but also in people’s hearts. We are delighted to see our CSRs in Taiwan have been recognised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs,” said Dr. Carsten Wildebrand, “Children are our future, and we believe if they have the chance to witness their capability, there is a real possibility to positively influence peoples´ attitudes towards DEI.”
