A sustainable refresh

Covestro uses 18 electrolyzers for chlorine production here in Leverkusen, each consisting of 162 membranes. These membranes facilitate chemical reactions through electrical current. Therefore, almost 3,000 membranes are replaced every six years. An elaborate renewal that pays off for the environment.

Modern technology reduces energy consumption and emissions

For the remembraning of its plants, Covestro relies on a modern, energy-saving process. The latest generation of anodes and cathodes ensure that there is no longer a gap between the two electrodes and the membrane. This reduces the electrical resistance and cell voltages in chlorine production. The result? A substantial decrease in both energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
