Sustainable production that saves solvents and energy

Covestro's gas phase technology has revolutionized the production of the isocyanate HDI – which is used worldwide in coating and adhesive raw materials, among other things. The key: The two ingredients react not as liquids as before, but in a gaseous state. This allows the use of raw materials and energy to be significantly reduced.

More sustainable production thanks to modern technology

With gas phase technology, plants require up to 60 percent less energy and up to 80 percent less solvent. A typical, large-scale production plant for HDI thus saves about 12,000 tons of CO2 per year compared to the conventional production process.

From technology to high-performance products

The isocyanate HDI is produced using gas phase technology and is used, among other things, as a raw material in automotive, furniture and parquet varnishes as well as sporting goods. In Leverkusen, the HDI is further processed and refined in the modification plant (MFI).
