Covestro's Flame Retardant Polycarbonate Shaping Transparent Gaming Aesthetics
- Excellent transparency, flame retardancy, and mechanical strength
- Thin-wall design ensuring outstanding design freedom
- Available in sustainable and NIA-PFAS versions to meet diverse needs including carbon reduction
Transparent design is emerging as a key trend for many gaming and smart products - from game controllers and computer cases to visualized cooling systems and RGB-lit keyboards. This design approach not only showcases players' personalities through avant-garde visuals but also reveals intricate internal structures, making high-performance hardware "visible" and becoming part of the player experience. German materials supplier Covestro recently introduced its high-performance transparent flame-retardant polycarbonate series, which maintains high transparency while achieving excellent properties like flame retardancy and durability, helping create safer, more durable, and stylish electronic devices.
Covestro will also conduct online webinars on this topic in both Chinese and English sessions, covering industry trends, solutions, and application examples. The Chinese session will be held at 10:00 a.m. on September 24 (Taiwan time), while the English session will be held at 2:00 p.m. on October 1 (EST).
Transparent Design Faces Challenges in the AI Era
Compared to opaque materials, traditional transparent materials have different physical properties that may limit their flame retardancy capabilities. For example, materials containing high concentrations of flame retardants can experience light scattering, reducing transparency and affecting overall appearance consistency. Meanwhile, transparent materials must also deliver excellent mechanical strength and durability to meet daily impact resistance requirements. Additionally, with thin-wall, minimalist, tech-forward designs dominating the market, materials need sufficient design freedom to support complex shapes and precision processing.
“Transparent design is reigniting limitless imagination in Electrical and Electronics Industry, particularly in gaming area,” said Thomas Derichs, Global Head of Industrial Marketing Electronics and Electrical, Engineering Plastics at Covestro. “Our innovative material solutions strike the perfect balance between aesthetics and reliability, offering safer, more durable performance. We look forward to collaborating with industry partners to shape a new era of smart and aesthetic products.”
Balancing Transparent Aesthetics with Safety and Reliability
Covestro's Makrolon® Transparent Flame Retardant polycarbonate solutions offer not only transparency and design freedom but also demonstrate significant advantages in flame retardancy and mechanical properties, meeting both aesthetic and functional requirements while supporting the visual revolution in gaming devices, laptops, and various consumer electronics.
Makrolon® Transparent Flame Retardant series creates immersive experiences for various electronic devices such as gaming laptops. With superior transparency, it achieves outstanding visualization and backlighting effects, allowing internal colorful lighting to instantly shine through and ignite the competitive atmosphere. This solution features outstanding flame retardancy and impact resistance, ensuring the safety and durability of gaming devices. It also supports thin-wall designs, making devices more portable for players while enhancing both visual and tactile experiences.
Enabling Visualization for Stable Device Operation
Transparent design not only presents a quality appearance but also allows users to intuitively see the internal operating state of products, making maintenance and operation easier. Makrolon® Transparent Flame Retardant series can be applied to equipment such as server air ducts, with higher transparency making internal components clearly visible, allowing users to more easily assess functional stability and performance. Additionally, this material excels in heat resistance and flame retardancy, ensuring the safe operation of devices even under high-temperature conditions.
Glass Fiber Reinforced Colored Transparency
Covestro also offers Makrolon® Transparent Series glass fiber-reinforced high translucent solutions, achieving an excellent balance between translucency, flame retardancy, and mechanical properties, with higher stiffness and impact resistance, giving electronic product housings strong support and security while maintaining a slim and stylish appearance. This solution can also provide bio-circular attributed components for ultimate carbon reduction, with Covestro integrating CMF design aesthetics into sustainable materials. Furthermore, the solution offers non-intentionally added PFAS versions to meet forward-looking industry and regional regulatory requirements.
