The only chemical company and the only project from APAC to receive an award

Covestro Taiwan Received PR News 2023 Social Impact Award

PRNEWS, the world’s largest events and digital media brand providing business intelligence and face-to-face experiences to the PR and Communications industry, has just announced the winners of its 2023 Social Impact Awards on 15 February. The Ocean Protection campaign, a collaborative initiative between government authorities, national parks/museums, institutions, and partners of Covestro Taiwan, not only was the Social Impact Award Winner for Campaign by a Non-US Based Company category, but also given honorable mention in both, the Global Sustainability Campaign category and the Global Education Campaign category.

Following the success of the Ocean Protection picture book and bilingual app that has been teaching children about conservation since 2017, Covestro Taiwan sought to organize a national story contest in 2022 in collaboration with thirteen partners to encourage children to develop a responsible attitude to waste and to influence adults' behaviors on the topic. The company also designed a shopping bag made from 2.8 recycled plastic bottles and provided them to children who showed a commitment to the earth, or adults who voted in the national contest. These bags were designed and distributed to help children understand that if they do waste management correctly and follow the 3Rs principle, they can help to save our oceans. The National Earth Guardian Storytelling Competition attracted 658 entries from 107 schools across Taiwan, with 24 categories of award winners coming from 15 of the 22 counties in Taiwan.

“The winners for this year’s Social Impact Awards are exemplary models of corporate social responsibility and diversity, equity and inclusion,” said Erika Bradbury, Editorial Director of US based PRNEWS. “Our honorees deserve to be
recognized for their work in their respective communities, and it’s a privilege to recognize them for their commitments.”

“Marine litter is a global challenge that can only be solved when industries, governments and people all work together,” said Matthias Poth, Head of Communications of Covestro AG. “To be fully circular is Covestro’s vision, and this also relies on correct waste management from consumers so that plastics can go back to its recycling circle. We are pleased to see that children and adults in Taiwan are engaged with our environmental protection campaign and made a heartfelt commitment to our earth. Also, thanks to all the partners who have supported Covestro Taiwan on this project since 2017.”

”wpd is pleased to hear that Covestro, a German based company like wpd, won the 2023 PR News Social Impact Award,” said Weiwei Tseng, chairperson of wpd Taiwan. “Due to having the same CSR philosophy, we are pleased to have jointly organized Covestro’s 2022 national environment storytelling contest and to have witnessed that if we instill the values of environmental protection from an early age, every child can be our little earth guardians.” wpd is a renewable energy company with headquarters in Bremen, Germany. The company is committed to the development, construction, operation and ownership of renewable energy assets. It has established more than 450MW onshore wind turbines and 16MWp solar photovoltaics in Taiwan, contributing to SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG 13 – Climate Action.

“The glory of the award not only goes to Covestro but also to all of the partners who supported us in the Ocean Protection campaign,” said Dr. Carsten Wildebrand, Managing Director of Covestro Taiwan. “Thanks go to the Ministry of Education who served as our advisor in the 2022 national contest and who has consistently recommended our Ocean Protection picture book and app since 2017, wpd Energy who has been a partner of Covestro since 2021 and the nine national parks and five national museums who helped us to raise awareness of the Ocean Protection campaign since 2017. Furthermore we would like to express our gratitude to our ten co-organizers who made our 2022 national environmental storytelling contest successful.”
