Covestro will present future-oriented material solutions at this year’s China International Import Expo (CIIE), contributing to sustainability across sectors such as construction, mobility, robotics and renewable energy.

The CIIE is a major import-themed expo that has been held annually in Shanghai since 2018. This marks the return of Covestro to the event after its participation from 2021 to 2023.

“The CIIE provides an important platform to engage with partners and explore new opportunities in China, a dynamic market that’s shaping global trends in areas such as electric mobility, renewable energy and robotics,” said Dr. Markus Steilemann, CEO of Covestro. “With our strong presence in the country, Covestro is committed to contributing to these developments while supporting the transition to a circular economy and creating long-term value for our customers and partners.”

Among the exhibits, Covestro will showcase an exterior wall insulation board made with a special Baytherm® polyurethane (PU) formulation. Due to ultra-low thermal conductivity, it supports the construction of ultra-low-energy buildings. Its optimized design delivers the same insulation performance with a 20 percent thinner layer than conventional PU, helping reduce the risk of exterior wall detachment and increase usable interior space. The material achieves B1, the highest flame-retardant rating for organic insulation materials in China, produces no flaming droplets and has low smoke density in fire tests. It also complies with Shanghai’s exterior wall insulation requirements.

25 years anniversary

This year’s participation has a special meaning for Covestro, marking 25 years since the start of intensive investment in China. In November 2001, Covestro broke ground on an integrated production site on the outskirts of Shanghai and launched the Polymer Research Development Center (PRDC) in the city. Today, the site is the company’s largest single production area and one of its most advanced, while PRDC has grown into the Covestro Asia-Pacific Innovation Center, driving innovation that benefits customers in China and beyond. Together, they form the backbone of the company’s presence in China and support customers and industries in the region through a local-for-local strategy.

“Coming back to the CIIE as we mark a quarter century of manufacturing and innovation in Shanghai is a powerful reminder of how deeply rooted Covestro is in China,” said Holly Lei, President of Covestro China. “Building on this presence and working together with partners across the value chain, we will continue to support key industries and the green transformation in China and beyond, with circular economy solutions that deliver performance in practical applications.”

Beyond the exhibits, Covestro will use the CIIE to deepen dialogue and strengthen partnerships across the value chain. The company is joining this year’s fair as part of the booth of ADNOC, its majority shareholder through the international investment arm XRG. Attendees are welcome to visit Covestro at Hall 3H, Booth 3B3-05 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) from November 5 to 10.
