Materials manufacturer Covestro has collaborated with leading color standards provider RAL to present 15 trendy colors in polycarbonate materials in RAL Colour Feeling 2021+, an essential guide to the color trends that will be driving future product, industrial and architectural design. This marks the first time the RAL color guide is presented in polycarbonate, the versatile plastic that Covestro invented in 1953, and it is a further effort by Covestro to explore more CMF (color, material and finish) design and solutions.
Founded in 1925, RAL introduced the first industrial color standard which became universally adopted as an exact color reference. As a color matching services provider, the company now provides the most comprehensive color tools and solutions to a variety of industries and sectors.

These new trendy colors with Colour Feeling 2021+ will be exhibited at the “Discover German Design and Lounge” (booth: H1 D206) hosted by the German Design Council at the Design Shanghai trade event at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center on November 26-29, 2020. RAL and Covestro are both members of the German Design Council.

“As an internationally renowned color matching system, RAL provides professional color cards for the industrial design field, thus requiring the highest degree of color accuracy,” said Dr. Christopher Stillings, Vice President, Global Head of Color & Design at Covestro’s Polycarbonates segment. “As one of the leading polycarbonate suppliers, Covestro not only leads in research and development of technologies for materials, but also has strong color and design teams worldwide. Our collaboration with RAL fully demonstrates the precision that our polycarbonate materials provide for color matching.”

“Via this cooperation, both parties will bring a comprehensive color and materials approach to designers. The partnership provides significant support to designers in attracting new customers and to create surprising solutions for already existing ones,” said Markus Frentrop, Global Head of RAL Colours.

Even the same colors, different materials will lead to subtle changes in visual experience. In order to ensure accurate and fast color matching, Covestro’s color and design centers in Italy, Thailand, India and China have worked consistently with RAL on the solutions, and wrapped up the matching of the 15 trend colors within just one month.

In September this year, Covestro cooperated with RAL for the first time by using RAL’s color codes in the company’s two CMF trend reports for the automotive industry and the electronics & appliances industry respectively.

In the future, Covestro will proactively explore collaboration opportunities with global color standards providers in an attempt to offer more CMF design and implementation solutions for polycarbonate materials, as part of the open innovation initiative. With these solutions, Covestro is committed to inspiring more partners to develop efficient, creative designs to ultimately bring added value to clients.

By leveraging the well-rounded capabilities from front-end trends research to back-end design applications, Covestro’s experts in CMF are integrating material processing technology with color solutions in a bid to create high aesthetic value for products eligible for mass production. With a global network of color and design experts, Covestro is able to provide customers with a variety of CMF solutions around the globe.
