Pittsburgh, September 10, 2019 — How can adults energize the next generation around sustainability issues, using the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) as a guide? In her latest Medium blog, Covestro’s head of corporate social responsibility and sustainability, Rebecca Lucore, outlines how the company is doing just that with the second THINC30 Tank it is hosting this year in Pittsburgh.

At Youthquake 2030: Gen Z and the UN SDGs, Pittsburgh teens will be introduced to the global goals and see how all three sustainability dimensions – environmental, economic and social – may be applied to local issues. Importantly, they will also learn about their role in creating a more sustainable world and putting their passion and purpose to work in Pittsburgh.

Lucore, who spearheads the company’s efforts in North America to bring the global SDGs to the company’s local communities, has also enlisted the help of the Consortium for Public Education to train teachers to engage the high school students in the “World’s Largest Lesson“ to solve local challenges.

Globally, Covestro signed on to the UN SDGs when they were first introduced in the fall of 2015. Around the same time, the City of Pittsburgh developed its resilience plan, OnePGH, around the UN SDGs. To support the city’s efforts and help introduce the UN SDGs to a wider audience, Covestro launched its THINC30 summits to “take the global goals local’ by bringing them to businesses, organizations and individuals throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.

With THINC30, Covestro has focused its efforts on Goal #17 – Partnership for the Goals. The summits are designed to create new collaborations among non-traditional partners from the public and private sectors to address critical local issues outlined by the UN SDGs, such as poverty, food insecurity and social justice.

In her role, Lucore is responsible for innovating new approaches to social programs, philanthropy and donations, community relations and sustainability initiatives in North America. She is the architect of the company’s award-winning THINC30 series, a centerpiece program of i3 (ignite, imagine, innovate), Covestro’s corporate social responsibility program in the U.S. i3 aims to spark curiosity, to envision what could be and to help create it. Its three focus areas – i3 STEM, i3 Engage and i3 Give – leverage the company’s current and future workforce, the communities in which it operates, and its partners and collaborators to create sustainable and lasting impacts.
