Formulating life-enhancing materials at MD&M West 2019

Anaheim, Calif., February 5, 2019 — The healthcare industry is continually evolving, calling for innovative materials to create cutting-edge devices and other medical applications. For 50 years, Covestro has offered tailor-made solutions to satisfy the needs of the industry and bring new products to life.

At MD&M West Conference and Exposition, Feb. 5-7 in Anaheim, California, Covestro will highlight its broad portfolio of polycarbonate resins, blends and films, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), TPU films and polyurethane-based adhesives and foams designed for the healthcare industry.

During the show, Covestro will debut Makrolon® Rx2235 polycarbonate, a new high-flow grade that helps manufacturers fill very thin walls and accurately replicate intricate features with lower pressures. This material is formulated for a variety of healthcare applications, such as on-body devices, surgical instruments, pen injectors and IV components.

The company will also unveil a connected drug delivery device prototype. This model incorporates various elements expected to be used in the future, such as clear and easy-to-understand language for self-administering patients, connectivity with the healthcare provider to ensure adherence to therapy recommendations and dosing, automatic detection of refill needs and more.

Additionally, Covestro will highlight the following applications utilizing its materials and technologies:

  • IV and surgical components: Due to their good balance of properties, including strength, durability and clarity, polycarbonate resins and blends are often utilized for a variety of surgical instruments, as well as syringes, catheters and other IV components.
  • Medical device housings and drug delivery devices: Polycarbonate resins and blends from Covestro are used to form durable medical device housings that protect interior components. The company’s biocompatible polycarbonate materials also help portable drug delivery devices withstand continuous use and chemical interaction.
  • Wound dressings and wound prevention: Polyurethane adhesive components from the Baymedix® A range are characterized by excellent breathability and low trauma removal to wound care applications, while Baymedix® FP polyurethane raw materials for foams possess excellent absorption and retention properties. Covestro also offers Platilon® TPU films with a particularly mat surface and other TPU materials for modern non-woven layers.
  • Skin-friendly medical wearables: Wearable electronic patch devices benefit from breathable Platilon® TPU films. Additionally, efficient production from roll to roll can be achieved using skin-friendly adhesive systems and thermoformable foams based on Baymedix® polyurethane raw materials. Covestro offers an overarching solution for modern and high-quality wearable patch devices.
  • Dental ligatures and medical tubing: Covestro TPU resins are used in several medical applications, including abrasion-resistant Texin® RxS285 for dental ligatures. Texin® RxT85A and Texin® RxT90A can be used for various types of medical tubing due to their flexibility, and can help prevent tube blockages. These grades are also resistant to chemicals, lipids, cleaning agents and bacteria, and offer high clarity for enhanced visual observation.

Several end-use applications that utilize Covestro materials will be on display, including drug delivery, surgical, IV and other innovative devices.

MD&M West attendees are invited to visit the Covestro booth (#2221) to learn how the company’s materials meet the ever-evolving needs of the healthcare industry. While there, they can also learn more about “TrendWatch™ Materials Matter for Connected Health,” a connected-device eBook developed in collaboration with the distribution business of PolyOne. The free, informative and interactive eBook offers insights into the IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) landscape and implications for material selection and design.
