Establishment of the Junior Research Group for Enzyme Catalysis in Sustainable Plastics Production

To realize the transformation from a linear plastics production process to a complete circular economy, the leading plastics manufacturer Covestro is increasingly harnessing the potentials of industrial biotechnology to make its products and processes even more sustainable.

Through the utilization of microorganisms and enzymes, novel plastics recycling and degradation processes are to be developed on a biotechnological basis. With this objective, Covestro has expanded its existing biotechnology competence center, which has been in operation for four years, to include the publicly funded "Junior Research Group Enzyme Catalysis" (NEnzy), working in close collaboration with RWTH Aachen University.
