Magic Slime Experiment with contact lens solution

Mix glue, baking soda, contact lens solution, and colorful pigments, then you can create an extendable and easily shapeable jelly-like magical slug!

You will need:

  • A glue
  • Contact lens solution
  • 1 spoon of baking soda
  • 1 drop of alkali-resistant color solution
  • A bowl
  • A plastic measuring spoon (1/4 teaspoon)
  • A transparent ball case

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Pour 2/3 bottle of glue into the bowl.
  2. Add 1 drop of alkali-resistant color solution and 1 spoon of baking soda.
  3. Pour 1 spoon of contact lens solution and stir evenly. Repeat this process three times until it is no longer stick on the bowl.
  4. Put the slug in your hand and continue kneading until it is no longer sticky.
  5. Put the slug in the transparent ball case to isolate it from the air. This can prolong its life cycle!

※Remember: Too much contact lens solution will easily lead to overreaction, so add it in an appropriate amount !

How it works:
The main component of the glue is a type of polymer molecule called "polyvinyl alcohol" (PVA). PVA interacts with "borate ions" which enables the cross-linking reaction to occur, hardening the structure between PVA molecules and making it not easily movable. This is how the magical slug is formed. Contact lens solution contains traces of boric acid. The "borate ions" and the PVA glue generate a cross-linking reaction. Since the acidity of the borate ions destroys the cross-linking effect, the slightly alkaline baking soda can neutralize the reaction and increase the viscosity of the slug.
