Polycarbonate keeps the lights on

LED luminaries used in harsh, industrial environments require durable materials to help light the way.

With this in mind, Shat-R-Shield Inc. developed the Incoplas™ LED Hybrid for its line of lightweight, corrosion-resistant LED fixtures. The company needed a heat-conducting material that helped maintain optimal performance in unfavorable conditions – and found what they needed from Covestro LLC.

The Incoplas™ LED Hybrid is designed to outfit an entire facility and functions as an area, flood or wall pack light. Makrolon® thermally conductive (TC) polycarbonate from Covestro is found in the main luminaire housing, acting as a heat sink to support thermal management requirements.

This lightweight polycarbonate is a superior choice when compared to aluminum – a material that is subject to corrosion in tough, industrial environments. It also allows the luminaire housing to withstand prolonged exposure to moisture, dust and chemicals common in industrial environments.

Makrolon® polycarbonate enables the dust tight, watertight luminaire to meet a target lumen output of 10,000 lumens – achieving IP69K, IP66, NEMA 4x and NEMA 5 ratings. Additionally, this material meets challenging thermal and environmental requirements, allowing for a versatile, lightweight luminaire design that can be easily installed with a variety of mounting options for various needs.

In addition to Makrolon® polycarbonate, the Incoplas™ LED Hybrid also utilizes two other Covestro materials:

  • Makroblend® resin: This flame-retardant material provides superior impact strength, dimensional stability and chemical resistance.
  • Makrolon® polycarbonate diffusion sheet: Used in the luminaire’s lens, this material features higher flammability resistance and wider service temperature – offering an advantage over acrylic diffusers.

This application demonstrates how the broad portfolio of polycarbonate products available from Covestro provides LED manufacturers with endless benefits for a variety of lighting applications.
