Polycarbonate for next-generation LED optics

Covestro is staying abreast of developments in the lighting industry. To advance the next generation of LED products for optics, the company recently developed Makrolon® LED5102 polycarbonate.

This UV-stabilized grade features a long lifetime and high transparency of more than 90 percent – surpassing competitor products and existing Makrolon® grades. With the highest light transmission, Makrolon® LED5102 polycarbonate also provides the best efficacy (lumen per watt) in lamp and luminaire optics.

In accelerated aging at elevated temperatures, Makrolon® LED5102 polycarbonate features:

  • A greater retention of luminous transmittance
  • Better color retention
  • Excellent stability under combined load of LED light and heat

Additionally, this polycarbonate material has low viscosity, allowing for fast cycling of injection molded parts with increased requirements for dimensional accuracy. Using Makrolon® LED5102 polycarbonate, manufacturers can improve the performance and extend the product life of secondary optics that require polycarbonate.
