Covestro developing new polycarbonate grades for thermal management

At Covestro, we strive to push boundaries with material developments that enable more design freedom for luminaire designers. Later this year, Covestro will broaden its portfolio of thermally conductive (TC) polycarbonate with new grades of Makrolon® TC materials. But first, we want to give our newsletter readers an early sneak peek at the new grades.

Makrolon® TC polycarbonate is an amorphous material providing high dimensional accuracy and stability over a broad temperature range. To highlight these key properties, Covestro is developing a range of electrically conductive materials with three new high-flow grades. These new Trial Product (TP) grades will offer significantly improved processability with proven thermal conductivity. Additionally, the high-flow grades will provide options to manage lower heat loads.

In addition to the new high-flow grades of Makrolon® TC polycarbonate, electrically insulating grades with lighter color and excellent surface quality are also being developed. Formulated with similar flowability, the electrical insulating grades are intended to provide options for combined designs of cooling devices and luminaire components, such as reflectors.

The new Makrolon® TC polycarbonate grades offer a range of conductivity.

The improved flowability is demonstrated with spiral flow experiments. Compared to Makrolon® TC8030 polycarbonate, flow length of the TP grades can increase by 100 percent at the same or even slightly improved thermal conductivity. The electrically insulating grades show flow length at same or even higher levels.
