A dose of durability and aesthetics

Biologic drugs – derived from a microorganism, or plant or animal cells – are one of the fastest-growing segments in the pharmaceutical industry. These products are often used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, diabetes and many other diseases. However, since they are injected or infused, they present challenges to patients – requiring them to make inconvenient trips to specialty healthcare facilities or perform painful self-injections.

Now, patients can comfortably self-administer high-volume and/or high-viscosity therapeutics using a disposable on-body drug delivery device developed by Enable Injections, Inc. Components of the device are injection molded using our polycarbonate materials, which lend durability and good aesthetics.

The device housing features Makrolon® Rx1805 polycarbonate in a purple tint. Often used to create transparent parts for medical devices, this resin features advantages such as:

  • Can be sterilized with high-energy radiation
  • Biocompatible according to many ISO 10993-1 test requirements
  • High viscosity and lipid resistance

The transfer system – which allows patients to easily transfer the biologic drug from its original container to the Enable on-body delivery device – utilizes Bayblend® M850 XF PC+ABS blend in a white tint. This grade offers a variety of benefits, including:

  • Biocompatible according to many ISO 10993-1 test requirements
  • Good flowability
  • Heat resistant up to 131°C (Vicat B/120)
  • High dimensional accuracy, stability and toughness

We supported Enable Injections every step of the way, helping find the right polycarbonate materials, conducting in-house part testing and providing manufacturing support.

With the sensitivity of biologic medicines, patient safety relies on the right materials for delivery and transfer systems. At Covestro, we continually work to provide medical OEMs with the materials they need to bring their devices to market and, in turn, improve patients’ lives.
