Medical polycarbonate innovation at CHINAPLAS 2018

As the largest plastics trade fair in Asia, CHINAPLAS always dazzles many attendees from across the globe – and this year’s show was no exception. In fact, CHINAPLAS 2018, April 25-27 in Shanghai, featured a record attendance of 180,701 visitors.
Covestro developed an IV connector prototype for customers to test the chemical resistance of luer connectors.

“Let’s Play” was the theme of the Covestro booth this year – demonstrating how we collaborate with the industry to drive innovation for customers. As a supporter of the advancement of healthcare, our medical materials were among the sights to see at the booth – including our new Makrolon® Rx3440 polycarbonate.

This new medical-grade material is designed for use in luers and other IV connectors – allowing healthcare professionals to safely deliver oncology drugs to patients. The use of Makrolon® Rx3440 polycarbonate in oncology drug devices was also the focus of a Tech Talk led by Pierre Moulinie, global technology manager and Arthur Wang, technical development manager for Polycarbonates. The Tech Talk highlighted a Covestro-designed testing apparatus that was instrumental in the development of the polycarbonate and can be used to test the chemical resistance of customers’ luer connectors.

At CHINAPLAS 2018, Pierre Moulinie and Arthur Wang discussed how Makrolon® Rx3440 polycarbonate is a solution for oncology IV devices.

Additionally, we showcased a variety of other medical applications at our booth, including:

  • A thermometer utilizing Bayblend® PC+ABS blend
  • A capsule gastroscopy robot featuring Makrolon® medical polycarbonate
  • Sunglass lenses with lens-quality-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate

The team spotted several medical trends on the show floor, such as self-treatment through wearable devices; targeted, precise treatment with mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) technology; and high standards for medical devices.

Overall, Covestro also noticed that companies aren’t solely focusing on solutions for OEMs, but also showing how they care about improving the daily lives of end users. Covestro does the same through our work in the medical industry – demonstrating how we are driving medical advancements as a reliable innovation partner.
