We caught up with Pierre Moulinie, a Covestro employee working to help strengthen our organization’s relationship with the medical industry.

Pierre has always been deeply interested in how materials science brings together many different disciplines to create something new. Having received degrees in chemistry from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, and Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, he began his career as a researcher with the National Research Council of Canada, focusing on thermoplastic foams. He then joined Bayer MaterialScience in 1999 as a research chemist, and from this point on, has worked with polycarbonate materials in a technical capacity.

Since 2008, Pierre has served the medical industry as part of the Polycarbonates group. As global technology lead for medical and consumer products, he helps align R&D priorities with those of key customers and the global industrial marketing strategy. With an eye on what customers are doing to adapt to medical trends, he works to ensure that Covestro will continue to have a compelling value proposition in future years.

According to Pierre, the medical industry is changing like never before. Demographic changes, cost pressures and a greater emphasis on improving patient outcomes are causing the industry – and Covestro – to innovate. He also notes that as a respected materials supplier, Covestro has excelled at serving the medical industry by being a reliable global partner. The company has a solid base on which it can apply its R&D know-how to extend its medical portfolio, serving a wide range of healthcare customers.

When asked what he likes about working in the medical industry, Pierre says that the work Covestro does in this area brings out the best in the company. He adds that employees are always aware of how the company’s materials help OEMs create life-saving products.

Having been with Covestro for 19 years, Pierre has enjoyed many experiences and projects. But one that stands out is volunteering through i3 (ignite, imagine, innovate) – the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative that aims to spark curiosity, to envision what could be and to help create it. Through these experiences, he has witnessed first-hand how excited young students can get about science.

During the warm summer months in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, you can catch Pierre on his motorcycle. He says that living in this area has spoiled him with fairly easy access to fun highways for riding.
