Ramping up medical polycarbonate production in Thailand

The Asia-Pacific medical device market is rapidly growing, thanks to an improved national healthcare policy and strong regional economic growth. Governments of emerging countries in this region are continuing their efforts to set up or upgrade medical device regulations related to a number of areas, including specific device quality standards, production and quality control.

With this market demand, there is an urgency for polymer material suppliers to provide versatile materials suitable for high-energy radiation sterilization. Medical device manufacturers are looking for biocompatible raw materials with consistent quality and traceability, and they must be available globally with short lead times.

To serve this growing market demand, Covestro’s plant in Map Ta Phut, Thailand, has expanded its development and production capacity for medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate. This site follows Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines for plastic materials to ensure that medical grades are consistently produced and controlled.

Covestro expanded its development and production capacity for medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate at its Map Ta Phut, Thailand plant.

Covestro offers high-performance materials to the healthcare industry that are used in demanding applications ranging from intravenous access, renal care and drug delivery to cardiovascular, blood management, respiratory and surgical instruments. Materials available in the Asia-Pacific region include Makrolon® products in both transparent and opaque colors; Makrolon® 2458 polycarbonate and Makrolon® 2858 polycarbonate suitable for steam and ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization; and Makrolon® Rx1805 polycarbonate, Makrolon® Rx2430 polycarbonate, Makrolon® Rx2440 polycarbonate and Makrolon® Rx2635 polycarbonate suitable for radiation sterilization.
