Innovative high heat polycarbonate makes a splash at Chinaplas

As the largest plastics and rubber trade fair in Asia – and the second most influential in the world – Chinaplas drew in more than 140,000 attendees and 3,300 exhibitors from across the globe. Packed full with customers, designers and other industry experts, the show gave Covestro a platform to showcase its leading material technologies for the plastics industry.

At the 3rd Medical Plastics Conference during this year’s Chinaplas, Covestro medical experts highlighted the company’s high-heat polycarbonate, Apec®. With a higher heat resistance compared to general purpose polycarbonate, Apec® is suitable for limited reuse after high-heat steam autoclaving up to 143°C.

Additional key characteristics of Apec® include:

  • High toughness
  • Glass-like transparency
  • Heat resistance between 158ºC and 203ºC (Vicat B/120)
  • High dimensional accuracy and stability

At the conference, Godwin Suen, product expert, Polycarbonates, Covestro Limited, discussed the use of Apec® for medical applications during a presentation titled, “Innovative High-Heat Polycarbonate for Medical Device Manufacturing Industry.”

Covestro also showcased its family of polycarbonate resins and resin blends for a number of medical device and health care applications, including blood management, patient monitoring and diagnostics, drug delivery and more. Visitors to Covestro’s display kiosks got a first-hand look at a dialyzer molded from Makrolon® polycarbonate, a reactive protein adsorber featuring Apec® and a prosthetic limb prototype 3D-printed from polycarbonate filament.
