Countdown to K 2016: Covestro’s innovative materials for the medical industry take the global stage

We’re gearing up for the world’s largest trade fair for plastics – K 2016! From Oct. 19-26, we’ll be in Düsseldorf, Germany, showcasing our innovative material solutions for a variety of products and markets, including health care. Here’s a quick preview.

Many hospitals face the potential problem of infections resulting from the administration of IV fluids. To combat these risks and contribute to patient safety, Elcam Medical developed the Marvelous™ (MRVLS) three-way stopcock. This device acts as a barrier against bacteria, featuring a novel inner channel that ensures self-flushing and minimized residual volume. Specifically developed for medical use, Makrolon® Rx1805 polycarbonate from Covestro was chosen as the ideal material for this application. This polycarbonate is highly transparent, easily molded, has good chemical resistance and because of its biocompatibility, it can be used in applications that require contact with body fluids. This grade can be sterilized with radiation, which is another important factor for patient safety.

Safety Syringes Inc., now integrated into BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), also took notice of the outstanding qualities Makrolon® polycarbonate possesses. The company saw Makrolon® polycarbonate as the top material choice for its UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guard – a single-use, anti-needle stick device for pre-filled injectable syringes that allows the syringe and needle to pull away rather than toward the patient. Makrolon® polycarbonate was chosen for this application thanks to its improved flow and easy release characteristics. In addition, this material’s high strength and transparency allow for visualization of syringe markings, labels and contents.

Also on display at K 2016 is an innovative capsule endoscope that puts an end to traditional, invasive endoscopy. This diagnostic device is swallowed by patients, delivering images of the stomach and intestinal walls along the way. Covestro collaborated with Shangxian Minimal Invasive Inc. to create capsule endoscope shells made with Covestro medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate. This polycarbonate is highly transparent, allowing for camera imaging clarity. It also features a high degree of design freedom, facilitating a wide angle for filming a broader field of vision.

Visitors are welcome to see these applications and speak with Covestro experts during K Fair at Covestro’s Stand A75 in Hall 6.
