A material that can take the heat

Sterilization of equipment is crucial in the medical industry to help prevent the spread of disease and reduce the risk for infection, but not all materials can take the heat. For applications requiring exposure to high temperatures for sterilization and secondary processing, our Apec® high-heat co-polycarbonate fits the bill.
Tristel Stella system

Medical devices can be subjected to a variety of sterilization methods requiring high temperature resistance, such as autoclaving or a high-temperature chemical bath. The ability to withstand higher-temperature liquid chemical baths can significantly reduce the time required to disinfect medical equipment, such as endoscopic and ultrasound instruments.

The Stella system, manufactured by Tristel Solutions Limited, is an example of a disinfection system that can increase procedure turnaround times in fast-paced clinical and hospital environments.

In addition to high heat resistance, the Apec® 1745 high-heat polycarbonate grade is biocompatible according to many ISO 10993-1 test requirements, a beneficial designation for medical applications. The material also boasts a heat deflection temperature (HDT) approximately 25ºC higher than standard medical grades of polycarbonate.

Because of its higher HDT, Apec® 1745 high-heat polycarbonate also makes an excellent substrate material for secondary processing steps such as liquid silicone rubber (LSR) overmolding. The higher HDT enables the LSR to be cured at a higher temperature, therefore decreasing rubber curing time and reducing processing costs related to LSR overmolding.

These properties as well as the material’s exceptional toughness, impact resistance and high transparency make Apec® 1745 high-heat polycarbonate appropriate for use in applications including medical vessels, syringe tops and medical device cases.

Apec® 1745 high-heat polycarbonate is just one example of the high-performance materials in our medical product portfolio.
