Eye-catching automotive lighting

Whether it’s lighting the path ahead or creating a visual sense of brand, automotive lighting has a clear purpose. Headlamps help a driver see the path ahead. Decorative automotive lighting makes passers-by see that a sleek vehicle is coming their way.

High-performance materials are an integral part of lighting capabilities. Covestro has several materials tailored for automotive lighting needs.

For instance, our Makrolon® AL2447 is an industry standard material for outer lenses.

Makrolon® 2405 polycarbonate, Apec® 1895 high heat polycarbonate and Baybend® T85XF polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) are used in metallized bezels and reflectors for forward and rear lighting.  Metallization is a trending effect, and our Bayblend® T90XG PC+ABS provides an enhanced metalized surface.

As the automotive lighting industry adopts more LED lighting sources, we have developed several products that support designer needs.

Our Makrolon® LED2045 polycarbonate and Makrolon®LED2245 polycarbonate are globally sourced and used in a variety of LED light pipe and light blade applications for superior transmission over standard polycarbonate.

The 2015 Ford F-150 LED headlamps are made with a special optical grade of polycarbonate from Covestro -- Makrolon® LED 2245 polycarbonate -- used in the lens for optical efficiency. When compared with glass, the material also enables a new level of design freedom compared with a traditional multi-lens design, as well as reduced cycle times and cost.

Along with that, we provide several ways to diffuse LED “hot spots” with a combination of our light diffusing colors, polycarbonate films (UV503 9-2) and reflective white products.

Our special reflective white grades have high efficiency in reflecting visible light. Compared to standard white grades, increased total reflection values up to 96 percent are reached, leading to very high brightness. Flame retardant grades are also available.

In multiple ways, our high-perofrmance materials can help you design eye-catching automotive lighting.
