CFRTP composites recognized as lightweight innovation

As consumers turn to light and thin electronic devices, manufacturers rely on lightweight materials to slim down their products. These materials not only meet users’ needs, but also help manufacturers lower shipping costs and reduce their environmental footprint.

Covestro is creating a sustainable future for lightweight products with a composite technology based on continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTP) in combination with a highly efficient production method. This technology earned Covestro a place in the spotlight at the 2017 European Plastics Innovation Awards, where the company won second place in the “Best Lightweight Innovation” category for its composite “A-Cover” for next-generation laptops.

CFRTP composites are appropriate for creating thinner, lighter and more robust parts for IT devices. When compared to magnesium-aluminum alloy, these composites achieve a weight reduction of approximately 15 percent. Additional benefits include good bending, torsional rigidity and a UL V-0 flammability rating.

With thermoplastic composites, engineers and product designers receive a new platform of opportunities for design and aesthetics. Various combinations of resins and carbon or glass fibers can be used to create optical effects and designed aesthetics, while maintaining mechanical performance. Textures can also be created within the mold by sandblasting, CNC milling and laser cutting. Additionally, laser-etched patterns transfer easily from steel molds. Using a single mold manufacturing concept, Covestro combines preheating, thermoforming and functional integration into a single process – resulting in fast, cost-efficient production.

New class of authentic aesthetics for design: Organic marble and wood grain effects for laptop covers
