Pioneering interior design

Major cities are a constant, bustling hub of activity. With so many people on-the-go, there is a strong need for traffic management. Mass transportation is the ideal solution in terms of increasing both convenience and speed. With a growing population and increased urbanization, railway system manufacturers are seeking to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact while also increasing passenger safety and comfort. Covestro and China South Railway (CSR) Nanjing Puzhen joined forces to create new interior designs for CSR’s low-floor trams that satisfy these needs.

The new designs were first implemented in the Suzhou New District. The company supplied the interior equipment for all low-floor trams of the new metro line number 1. This project was the first to be approved by the China National Development and Reform Commission through official tender.

For its train components, CSR Nanjing Puzhen sought lightweight parts that provided greater energy efficiency, particularly using a material that made cutting-edge interior designs possible, while at the same time maximizing passenger safety through its flame retardant properties. Covestro’s Bayblend® FR3030 polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC/ABS) resin blend and Makrolon® polycarbonate sheets fit the bill for CSR Nanjing Puzhen’s needs. In addition to possessing these characteristics, Covestro’s polycarbonate sheets are also available in appealing designs, colors and surface textures, enabling state-of-the-art interior designs. These sheets were utilized for the trams’ interior wall paneling.

Covestro’s thermoplastic sheets are produced using modern extrusion technologies, allowing for the creation of high-quality, lightweight and yet still durable interior rail components in an environmentally conscious manner. The sheets exhibit excellent dimensional stability over a wide range of temperatures. At the same time, production cycle times are shortened with new processes, allowing for a greater production volume of thermoformed components. Covestro thermoplastic sheets utilized by the rail industry have satisfied all flame and smoke- safety requirements, making them an ideal choice for industrial applications.

Covestro’s mass transit experience coupled with the design capabilities offered by its polycarbonate sheets helped enable CSR Nanjing Puzhen to create a sleek and safe rail trams system ushering in the future of light rail tram design.
