Task

A new device to alleviate accidental needlesticks

Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) set out to create a new device to alleviate these risks: the UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guard – a single-use, anti-needle-stick device for pre-filled injectable syringes. It allows the syringe and needle to pull away from the patient after injection back into the guard.

Challenge

A material that is yet durable, transparent and easily moldable

BD’s UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guards are composed of two telescoping thermoplastic components and a spring. To manufacture this medical device, BD needed to find a material that was not only durable and transparent, but also offered improved flow and would easily release from the mold.

The medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate was the optimal material choice for BD’s UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guard: it flows well and is easily released from the mold which increases the design flexibility even of complicated parts.
