Makrolon® helps to make syringes safe

A guard against accidental needlesticks

There are many risks involved with patient diagnostics and medical care. An injury from a medical needle, for example, can cause infections, illness and even death. Covestro’s high-productivity, medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate helps to maximize the performance and efficiency of UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guard in preventing accidental needlesticks.

A new device to alleviate accidental needlesticks

Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) set out to create a new device to alleviate these risks: the UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guard – a single-use, anti-needle-stick device for pre-filled injectable syringes. It allows the syringe and needle to pull away from the patient after injection back into the guard.

A material that is yet durable, transparent and easily moldable

BD’s UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guards are composed of two telescoping thermoplastic components and a spring. To manufacture this medical device, BD needed to find a material that was not only durable and transparent, but also offered improved flow and would easily release from the mold.

Medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate combining safety and efficiency

The medical-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate was the optimal material choice for BD’s UltraSafe Passive® Needle Guard: it flows well and is easily released from the mold which increases the design flexibility even of complicated parts. In addition, its high strength and transparency makes it easier to see syringe markings, labels and contents. For even more patient safety.
