Futurix series of LED lamps


Shine a light in any wind and weather

Belgian manufacturer VLUX looked for a material solution for its Futurix series of LED lamps designed for industrial and outdoor environments. The Futurix series satisfies the requirements of the IP 65 safety classification (IP stands for international protection) and features outstanding performance qualities.


A strong yet inviting lighting system

As the LED lamps of the Futurix series are designed to provide a good light even under bad weather or working conditions, the challenge was to achieve a strong, weatherproof yet inviting lighting system. It had to meet the requirements of transmission and half-peak beam angle, and take into account the required wall thickness and complex shape of the lamp covers.


A polycarbonate specially developed for the Futurix series

To find a solution to all these requirements, Covestro specially developed Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate for the lamp covers of the Futurix series. The translucent, white colored Makrolon® 2207 polycarbonate is inherently flame retardant, heat-resistant and tough enough to withstand high impacts, enabling the LEDs to endure long exposure to different environmental impacts. The warm, white material produces a pleasant atmosphere without glare. On top of that, the thermoplastic material’s low shrinkage and low tendency to warp contributes to the dimensional stability and tightness of the luminaire construction. This made it an excellent choice to protect the LED luminaires against dust and water spray.
