Medical materials shine at Compamed/Medica 2017
Visitors learned about antimicrobial wound dressings during a presentation by Dr. Marc-Stephan Weiser, Head of Global Business Development, Medical at Covestro. These highly absorbent dressings feature flat foam cushions that protect open wounds from dirt. Covestro has developed innovative raw materials that allow antimicrobial wound dressings to be manufactured using a simplified process. Active ingredients can be mixed in the foams during production with minimal additional effort-saving manufacturers time and money. Foams made from Covestro raw materials do not yellow, and therefore maintain a more hygienic appearance.
At Compamed/Medica, Covestro debuted a new line of Platilon® films. These films have matte surfaces and are pleasant to the touch. When in contact with clothing, they feature lower friction than glossy films, making them a longer-lasting material option. Additionally, adhesives from raw materials cling especially well to the skin and are easy to remove-preventing pain and injury to newly grown skin cells.
Covestro also highlighted modern material solutions for wearable patches. These patches contain sensors that measure a variety of body functions, including temperature and pulse rate, and are connected with electronic devices which monitor the therapy. Covestro materials provide several benefits for wearable applications as they help manufacturers improve their production efficiency, have a modern design and offer a high wear comfort.
Visitors to the Covestro booth also had the opportunity to learn about polycarbonate materials for medical applications, including Makrolon® polycarbonate and Apec® high-heat polycarbonate resin.
