A breath of fresh air with Covestro polycarbonate

Some individuals with respiratory insufficiency can carry out everyday activities with simple oxygen therapy, while others have a more serious condition that calls for mechanical ventilation administered by a qualified, trained professional.

To help improve quality of life for these patients, Breathe Technologies Inc. offers two portable, wearable ventilation systems – the Non-Invasive Open Ventilation (NIOV)™ device and the Life2000h™ ventilator for life-support patients. To make these high-quality devices a reality, Breathe Technologies relies on durable, lightweight and long-lasting materials. Covestro LLC delivered with polycarbonate for components used in both systems.

The Breathe Pillow Interface™ offers ventilation therapy that does the work of breathing for a patient. This interface’s slim and low profile design allows patients to talk, eat or exercise while undergoing therapy. Found in the latest-generation models of the NIOV and Life2000h™ ventilation systems, the Pillow Interface Sizing Gauge allows patients to select the interface size with the most effective and most comfortable fit. Both of these components are injection molded from transparent Makrolon® 2858 polycarbonate from Covestro.

Makrolon® 2858 polycarbonate is ideal for medical devices, with features including:

  • Easy release from mold due to medium viscosity
  • Ability to be ETO and steam sterilized at 121 C
  • Biocompatibility according to many ISO 10993-1 test requirements

The benefits Makrolon® 2858 polycarbonate offers to the NIOV and Life2000h™ ventilation systems demonstrate Covestro’s dedication to improving patient experience through materials.

Makrolon® is a registered trademark of the Covestro group.
