Individuals suffering from infections, inflammation or tissue damage often have significantly higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP). This blood plasma protein, part of the endogenous immune system, is formed in the liver and then passes into the bloodstream. Reducing elevated CRP levels can be very beneficial to an individual’s health. For example, selective lowering of increased CRP concentrations after a myocardial infarction could reduce the infarction area and, in turn, decrease the risk of heart failure.
Pentracor, a medical technology company based in Hennigsdorf, Germany, developed an adsorber for selective removal of CRP in the context of extracorporeal apheresis. The PentraSorb® CRP required a transparent, heat-resistant material that was also dimensionally stable.
Apec® 1745 high-heat polycarbonate from Covestro met these criteria and proved to be the ideal material for the adsorber casing. The casing is injection molded, and the parts are then joined together with ultrasonic welding, with filter elements also being integrated at the same time. This grade of high-heat polycarbonate is suitable for high-pressure steam sterilization and is highly robust. In addition, it is approved for contact with body fluids, another important property for this application.
