Covestro won big for an innovative polyurethane paint hardener at the prestigious 2015 British Coatings Federation Awards. We came away with the British Coatings Federation Sustainable Innovation Supplier Award for its Desmodur® eco N 7300 polyurethane hardener due to its sustainable credentials.
The biomass curing agent Desmodur® eco N 7300 was singled out as a new light stable polyurethane raw material with around 70 percent renewable carbon content derived from non-fossil-based inputs - the first product of its type on the market. Its potential applications include coatings, adhesives and potentially anywhere where conventional hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) trimers are used. Using it significantly reduces the carbon footprint from cradle to gate for automotive OEMs and manufacturers.
Its foundation is pentamethylene diisocyanate (PDI), a revolutionary innovation in polyurethane chemistry as it is the first diisocyanate in 30 years to be fully developed and scaled-up. It is on par with conventional curing agents for coatings and adhesives, even though this product is based on biomass.
