Covestro has research and development facilities around the world, where it is constantly seeking new possibilities for industry-specific solutions, as well as for the longer term.
In 2016, Covestro spent about 259 million € on research and development, corresponding to roughly 2.2 percent of total sales.
About 1000 of Covestro's 15,600 employees work in three global innovation centers. Many of these experts are located in Shanghai, China, developing new ideas for applications using high-tech plastics, foams and coatings in the areas of mobility, construction, information technology and renewable energies.
There are also two further main innovation centers in Leverkusen, Germany, and Pittsburgh, United States, was well as several smaller R&D facilities in other countries. This regional structure with short, direct lines to the various markets and customers helps Covestro in particular to recognize where exactly there is a need for innovative materials and application solutions. By means of a systematic innovation management we select the most promising from the multitude of ideas and then manage the corresponding projects efficiently and with a focus on success.
A number of Covestro’s researchers and innovative projects have won awards and accolades. In 2015, for example, an innovative chlorine manufacturing process that saves significant amounts of electricity was honored by the government of Germany’s most populous state North Rhine-Westphalia as a flagship project for climate protection.
