Lens-grade polycarbonate enables high-performance eyewear applications

When original equipment manufacturer Jiangsu Sigo Optical decided to upgrade the polycarbonate used for its corrective and sunglass lenses, materials that were capable of scalable production and provided premium optical purity became the top priority. Covestro’s lens-quality-grade Makrolon® polycarbonate offered excellent optical properties, high mechanical strength, comfort and toughness. Providing valuable technical assistance, Covestro’s team helped Jiangsu Sigo Optical scale up production lines with the new material in just three months.

Makrolon® DP1-1821 polycarbonate is formulated specifically for the optical/ophthalmic market, and utilized in corrective lenses. Makrolon® LQ2887 polycarbonate, a new optical grade, is used in high-performance sunglass lenses for outdoor sports and activities, providing UV protection, impact-resistance, and style. Makrolon® LQ2887 polycarbonate provides UV protection from wavelengths of up to 400 nanometers (nm), blocking both UVA and UVB rays. This allows sunglasses using the Makrolon® LQ2887 polycarbonate to be labeled “UV 400” for almost 100% UV protection. Furthermore, this material offers a thin and fashionable design along with impact resistance, appropriate for outdoor sports such as mountain biking and beach volleyball. It is also suitable for both the beach and mountains, environments where water and snow reflect harmful UV rays.
