Honeywell (RAE system) plans to design a portable wireless multi-gas diffusion detector, named MicroRAE, that simultaneously measures up to four types of gas: hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2) and combustibles (LEL). It aims to deliver instantaneous feedback by relaying real-time gas, alarm, safety, and compliance readings to a remote location. Gas detection receptors have been designed to be equipped on workers in even the harshest of environments, creating a need for lightweight, durable, impact and heat resistant materials. Covestro’s team has been asked to support Honeywell (RAE system) by using its patented Makroblend® to resolve the durability and molding issues with the product’s housing material.
The MicroRAE gas detector is effective for a range of industrial uses: plant overhauls, public safety events, radiation detection and more. In order to give workers full range of motion while wearing their detector, the device has been designed to be small, lightweight and easy to handle. As the primary housing material for MicroRAE, Makrolon® 2805 polycarbonate is both lightweight and durable enough to meet the detector’s design needs. Furthermore, the material has excellent heat and impact resistance – even at extreme temperatures. It is the ideal material for Honeywell’s MicroRAE.
Covestro’ team used the Makroblend® to further strengthen the housing and resolve the molding issue. Makroblend® combines the superior properties of polycarbonate and polyester for high durability and a low thermal expansion coefficient. It also boasts high resistance to chemical corrosion and functions in extreme temperatures. Finally, Makroblend® ‘s reduced susceptibility to stress cracking strengthens the housing materials overall. As both a supplier and technical partner, Covestro successfully assisted Honeywell (RAE system) in developing an ideal material solution with highest quality standards.
