The company has developed a process that significantly reduces the amount of electricity required and the use of solvents.

The high-tech plastic polycarbonate can be produced in a particularly environmentally friendly way.
Polycarbonate is a true all-rounder. The material is light and shatterproof and can withstand heat, cold, wind and bad weather. It can be flexible or stiff, colored or colorless, transparent or opaque. This high-tech plastic can also be molded into virtually any shape. And what’s more, it is easy to process and can be re-used several times over.

These properties make the material an attractive option for numerous key applications in the construction, medical, electronics and automotive industries. Thanks to components made from polycarbonate, for example, vehicles weigh less and so use less fuel.

20 percent less electricity

This plastic also benefits from an environmentally friendly manufacturing process. The melt condensation process is the result of development work by Covestro, one of the world’s largest polycarbonate producers. Its specific electricity consumption – that is to say the amount of electricity required to produce a specific quantity – is on average around 20 percent lower than the conventional production process. And the specific water consumption is an even more impressive 60 percent lower. Less solvent is used, too, because none at all is needed for the final production step. The advantage is that the polycarbonate obtained is solvent-free.
